Moderator censorship at the DT.

October 10, 2010 by Syd

Well I can thank them  for something a new blog, contrary to what we were told that censorship and moderation on the James Delingpole blog would be light it has become an ideological battle ground once more with the usual pretend characters popping up such as Fabian Solutions reporting people left and right and claiming homophobia, racism, europhobia, misogyny, islamophobia and any phobia it could think of.  The mods as usual agree with this loathesome creature and immediately show their personal biases as definitely left of centre.

When the comments of people who are saying the equivalent of golly gosh darn it are being removed we know things have gone too far.

I posted this on the JD blog I do not expect it to survive but this how I feel things are.

“It has been brought to my attention that because of the terms and conditions of the DT this is how any future discussion will take place firstly humour is not allowed, no disparaging of the religion of peace or same sex relationships.
Here is a sample conversation for you to follow.
Bob “I disagree with AGW”
Susie “I believe in AGW”
Bob and Susan “We agree to disagree, goodnight and toodle pip”.
A censor immediately misunderstands the terms toodle pip and automatically bans them for life for being racist, homophobic, misogynistic and islamophobic just to be sure they throw in xenophobic.
Any deviation from this message will be met with extreme censorship just like in Cuba or China.”

So I dedicate this song to censors everywhere.

As for Dam’s turning away, however will we cope Crown without the spice and insight and general great fun that he brings to this blog (or indeed to any blog)?
    [wicked laugh]

  2. on October 18, 2010 at 8:35 am Amanda

    missing word: should be ‘what…about’

  3. on October 18, 2010 at 8:34 am Amanda

    Crown:
Don’t know what Dam is shaking his head in ‘weary’ (note the ‘weary’) disbelief, but note also that

    1) This is what Dam does, and he is never happier than when doing it;
    and
    2) He keeps coming back to your website because he loves us really! LOL

    :shakes head in weary disbelief.

    :turns away.

  5. on October 17, 2010 at 8:08 pm Amanda

Crown, so you’re saying that you could sort of ‘hide’ within the impersonality and that would encourage you to behave more cavalierly/disrespectfully towards opponents? Yes, I can see that.

My other thought was that if you are C9H0BB instead of ‘Crownarmourer’, and I’m whatever my padlock combination is, then it’s harder for us to keep track of one another — harder for the Pros and Antis to see their battle colours or flags. Right now, I just see ‘RealityReturns’ or you or ‘Scientific Anomaly’ or ‘Msher’ or one of Mack’s identities, and I know instantly I’m dealing with One Of Us. But what if we were all licence plate numbers? Impossible or tedious to keep track of, and thus would be difficult to maintain a sense of community and unity among known entities.

Anyway I thought it was mildly interesting as a thought experiment: take away the personalities and the obvious possible irritants (e.g. RR’s Confederate flag), and make people deal only with issues and the written argument. In so far people are *capable* of written argument, of course.

    • on October 17, 2010 at 11:25 pm crownarmourer

Yes I see your point but people are intrinsically hard wired to gather into groups and form a tribe us against them it would all the CB101**** against those bastards the DR202**** people, somehow some way it would happen but maybe someone should do it as psychology experiment on a group. If you are smart you would start remembering friends id’s after a while.

      • on October 18, 2010 at 8:37 am Amanda

If you are smart you would start remembering friends id’s after a while.

True — but initially it throw all into confusion and the reaction would be worse than when the DT went to Disqus!

  7. on October 17, 2010 at 2:57 pm Amanda

    Crownarmourer sir,
Here’s an idea I just throw out for your — or anybody’s consideration (I suppose that includes your new best pal with the goggly eyes).

What if the public blogs (I’m thinking of big profit concerns such as the Telegraph Group, not a semi-public blog such as Ozboy’s) had a new protocol for posters? I don’t mean a speech code; this protocol would be about self-identification. No avatars, no self-chosen names. You all basically get a number-letter combo as in a car licence plate. All sex-neutral (though you’re still free to state your sex if you wish as to rule that out would infringe on reasonable free speech). So for instance I could not post as ‘Amanda’ but instead would be T78NR. The goal would be to depersonalize the blogs, to strip the easily seen individual character of the posters somewhat and put more emphasis on what they actually write. This would reduce the mud-slinging because one couldn’t make jibes about ‘helmet-head’ as there would no avatar picture to ridicule; I couldn’t be called a silly cow because that’s an insult to a woman and no one could tell that I was female (unless I stated the fact, and even then it would just be my say-so); and racial or other general characteristics would be hidden as well. Consequently there might be less need to resort to the Report button or argue about who is being fair, whether attacks are ad-hominem, etc.

A good idea? Or a lousy one?

    • on October 17, 2010 at 7:25 pm crownarmourer

A good idea in principle but it would deny individual choice and responsibility, so you are trading gender neutral identity’s against personalized identity’s. If I had a gender neutral id I may be more tempted to slag people off as peoples identities would get mixed up as I was mistook for someone else.

  8. on October 16, 2010 at 2:47 am Damocles

I wouldn’t say hurting my head.

Sometimes one writes a short post and doesn’t think that someone’s going to try to read between the lines and come up with yet more ‘theory’.

    It’s bizarre and ridiculous.

    • on October 16, 2010 at 11:53 pm crownarmourer

Ok guilty of that one sometimes but have you ever considered the possibility that some of us are deliberately misreading.

      • on October 17, 2010 at 1:08 am Damocles

Then it’s particularly bizarre and ridiculous.

        You want to act offended?

  9. on October 16, 2010 at 2:20 am damoclesbda

“You have never been to the North East of England have you?” I go there all the time. I spend most of my time with someone from there.

    • on October 16, 2010 at 11:41 pm crownarmourer

      Damn that blows my theory.

  10. on October 15, 2010 at 9:28 pm Amanda

    ‘Fabian’s genuine’:

    1. My assumption is that people are genuine unless there is evidence otherwise;

    2. Why is Damocles pronouncing; how does he certainly know?

    3. If Fabian is really real, gawd help us all, and I mean that sincerely. Entirely the type of true believer and devil-take-the-hindmost don’t-think-about-it-too-much type that would stick a red hot poker up you in the Inquistion. I do not like, nor especially do I trust, the Fabians of this world.

    • on October 15, 2010 at 10:35 pm crownarmourer

Nobobody who claims to be a 16 year old girl is that into politics unless the parents have brainwashed the child into it. Most 16 year old girls are into boys and clothes etc. Not all I grant you but most hold weird ideas at that age. Usually they grow up. My guess Fabian is older than 16 a Germaine Greer on acid.

    • on October 16, 2010 at 1:44 am Damocles

“2. Why is Damocles pronouncing; how does he certainly know?”

      Oh FFS …

      • on October 16, 2010 at 2:02 am crownarmourer

We hurting your head yet as we I mean we the group are incorrigible. You have never been to the North East of England have you? Damocles you have no idea how our humour is twisted as in we can take a perfectly sane point of view and do a 270 degree on it. We get bored a lot.

  11. on October 15, 2010 at 12:13 am Damocles

I don’t think anyone on either side is being paid to comment there. I do think several people on both sides are getting off on the vitriol (See Geoffrey Lean’s latest blog) and I don’t need that negativity in my life.

FYI I only “went after” Mack, because I believe that banned should mean banned and his hatred is beyond the pale, that Arabic stuff about Kate was utterly unwarranted. I see the mods are letting the latest incarnation go, for now.

If I was as crazy about conspiracies as some people I might ask who would do some random reports to bring together ill feeling and try to get some sort of inverted team spirit that way … hmm … but I’m not a crazy so I’ll let that one go.

    • on October 15, 2010 at 3:06 pm crownarmourer

I had completely forgotten about the Kate and arab thing and I assume you mean Ms Day. My thoughts on banishment are you locked out for a month then let back in if you behave yourself but it is impossible to block people as you know, and we do get paid bloggers a certain mr Dee was one for a while talked to him when he was on vacation nice guy actually except for his weakness for the IRA. Some of the supposed trolls I suspect to be DT employees either larking around or trying deliberately to push up the hit counts. Fabian Solutions may be one and way too crazy to be real but effective in getting the comments going.

      • on October 15, 2010 at 4:55 pm Damocles

        Fabian’s genuine.

        • on October 15, 2010 at 10:28 pm crownarmourer

    Sad but true not rue.

  13. on October 13, 2010 at 8:42 pm Amanda

    Crown,
Tonight I posted something on the DT (Deling’s) and it disappeared a few minutes later. I’m sure it was posted: I saw it there. Then it was gone — no ‘comment removed’ or any sign it was there. Hmmm….

    • on October 14, 2010 at 12:19 am Damocles

I’ve probably been sleep reporting. Yes, that’s it. I’ve gotten up in my sleep and reported your comments.

      Makes perfect sense.

      • on October 14, 2010 at 7:34 pm Amanda

Crown, just for the record, I wasn’t referring to Damocles at all, nor did I even think of him; I was simply wondering where my post disappeared to. Of course, other people’s egotism may lead them to suppose that everyone else is thinking of them. Sad but rue.

      • on October 14, 2010 at 10:49 pm crownarmourer

Damocles we know it’s not you reporting everyone all the time it would mean you have no life which I doubt and you are a major insomniac, also we have other people way more sensitive than you would ever be.
There are people out there that would make Oliver Cromwell look like a liberal.
For the recored it would be nice in an ideal world if every one could be civil or joke around in a fairly harmless fashion but James D’s blogs are where the metaphoric gun slingers meet and find out who is the fastest draw. It makes for a for a more interesting blog. I just wish the paid party bloggers would keep away or the idealogical zealots on a mission to block real discussion. On other blogs everyone I do try to behave well ish but I can not resist a good joke. On a lot of social issues I take the practical approach and am not swayed by any religion some things I disagree with for the sake of society’s general good because I generally can see the law of unintended consequences and which bunch of real weirdos are next to demand rights.

    • on October 14, 2010 at 10:29 pm crownarmourer

That does happen sometimes with mine it’s disqus being sucky. I usually have to repost in this case we can not blame anybody.

I spent most of the weekend hill walking and mushroom picking.

    It’s sociopathic behaviour you’re describing.

    • on October 12, 2010 at 1:31 pm Damocles

If blaming me for every post that gets removed or moderated helps you deal with the pain and the horror of it all then at least I’m doing something to help you get through the day.

It’s no bother, happy to help.

      • on October 12, 2010 at 4:14 pm crownarmourer

Your own fault for playing silly buggers over the weekend with Tom Chivers to what amounted to a childish prank to piss people off for your own amusements under the guise of correcting peoples behaviour. That is what psychopaths do, try and manipulate people for fun as people are things to them.

  16. on October 12, 2010 at 10:00 am Damocles

As ever I spoke (wrote) too soon. It seems Crown himself has decided to jump onto the bandwagon of unwarranted abuse.

Give it your best shot kiddo, I’ve been called worse things by better people.

    • on October 12, 2010 at 12:19 pm crownarmourer

Damocles you are a do gooder with the best of intentions wanting to improve every ones life for them but gradually making every one else miserable. As they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

      • on October 12, 2010 at 12:53 pm Damocles

        That’s your best shot?

        Pah!

        • on October 12, 2010 at 1:17 pm crownarmourer

Calling you schoolyard names would achieve nothing but I have had neighbours just like you or nice and polite on the surface but petty and mean spirited to the core. As their personal lives are without meaning and miserable they wish to lash out at their fellow human beings. You should work in the government as a civil servant perfect job for you.

  17. on October 12, 2010 at 6:10 am meltemian

I think there is no question we would ALL like to see a completely impartial investigation into the whole climate change question.
The difficulty is how we arrive at that impartiality with no vested interest connection.
There seems to be no end to the ramifications of the climate change “industry” for that is what it has become. So many livelihoods have come to depend on it, and impartiality will be hard to come by.

    • on October 12, 2010 at 6:49 am Damocles

It would require a balanced approach involving open minded people from all concerned scientific areas.

Incidentally, I’ve been reviewing comments on James’s blogs for the last few hours and with one or two exceptions there does seem to be more discussion and less abuse than there was a week ago.

  18. on October 12, 2010 at 3:53 am Damocles

OK, Crown, for a long time a situation has existed where those who support the idea that Global Warming is Anthropogenic have marginalised and shouted down any and all who oppose them. “The science is settled” being one such mantra. This we know.

On James’s blog there has been a fight back, however it is my opinion that the fight back has gone far enough to be a mirror of the behaviour of the Anthropogenicists. Anyone who has a view which does not sit inside the view held by various die hards on that blog is shouted down and marginalised. Such shouting down includes cries of “warmist” and various personal remarks and cries of “Ooh don’t talk to him he’s horrid” and, of course, the name calling.

I ask you, do you want to be involved in a movement where the first line of defence is to shout childishly? Where people have to be instructed to whom and with whom they are allowed to discuss things? [As a side note I adopted the “personal ignore button” some years ago online, at a certain level it is amusing to watch people who know that I might be ignoring them tying themselves in knots as they try to provoke me into response, it’s a personal choice I decide who I cast into a personal void.]

The resignation of Hal Lewis should be viewed as an opportunity to break out of this mould. Here is a qualified man who has resigned because he is unhappy at the leck of useful discussion in his field. He doesn’t want to work in a discipline that takes one tack and drives at it relentlessly at the expense of the scientific method. So could we use that opportunity? Could we say “OK, Hal asked for a topical group on Climate Change, why can’t there be such a symposium? Why can’t such a thing be organised outside of the politics and the money and the law and the childish ranting and get some real scientists discussing real things for real effect?”

If you recall I tried to say something along those lines the other day. I was, of course, shouted down. “Oh no that can’t happen because of the politics”, “Oh no you’d need aliens”, “Oh no that can’t happen because of the money”

But the politics and the money are the very reasons why ordinary people need such a thing to happen. If it turns out that the politics and the money of Anthropogenic Climate Change are built of flimsy papier mache stilts rather than on solid foundations then we, the ordinary people, need this to be sorted out sooner rather than later. It is only by public investigation of the foundations of the movement that the structure above it can be judged. If those foundations are found to be compromised then the building will collapse. If they are not then the building will be safe.

It is in the interests of both those who support and oppose the building to have these foundations investigated fairly and impartially. Anyone on either side who shrinks from such an investigation through name calling, flippancy and childishness puts their own credibility at risk.

That is the stance on which my actions are based.

This is too important a matter to be sidetracked by the egos of a few rebarbative individuals. We must move to a sane and reasonable stance or the allegations of trying to stop debate will be justifiably leveled at us by the Anthropogenicists at a time when we should be engaging them to the betterment of us all.

You missed your calling as witch finder generals in the 16th century. However I’m not going to stoop to your level of wishing to quell any debate, I shall give you both the world view from the darkest pits of hell. Dearie, dearie me. It sounds like you’ve got it bad. Next you’ll be telling us deniers about how our denialism cannot deny that thousands of scientists can’t be wrong and that we can’t refute the fact the overwhelming peer reviewed science demonstrates that AGW is real.

Responsibility is important, but ‘responsible’ is NOT defined as ‘that which appeals to Damocles and/or Leftist flame-throwers on the Dental Telepath’.

1 person You still do not understand free speech it is that very ability to make a fool of yourself with either a lame joke or nasty remark or even hateful speech. Free speech means the right to be offended just as someone then has the right to beat me silly for saying something really dumb, free speech after all comes at a price.
Was it not Voltaire to paraphrase said I dislike what you say but I will fight for your right to say it.
Yes there are limits to free speech such as inciting a riot or yelling fire in a crowded movie theatre for example but that is they involve physical harm to others. When it comes to emotions I’m afraid you are out of luck life is hard and so is reality.
Also a large number of people are getting rather annoyed at the moderation around here when the mods censor msher and amanda then we know there is a definite bias going on.
As neither one of them crosses any line and we know one of the mods is letting their personal belief systems enter the moderation. Don’t hide behind the T&C excuse that is the act of a bureaucrat not a human being.
99% of the time I get a comment removed I don’t really care as it will not be changing the world and admittedly yes I crossed the imaginary boundary so it is not an issue.
However it has been way too excessive on a few blogs lately and the peasants are arming with metaphoric pitchforks and torches and looking at yonder castle Telegraph. Report Recommend Reply

By the way, if I know James Delingpole, he would love your video, SA!

  37. on October 10, 2010 at 8:50 pm Amanda

SA: Not only are you allowed to say those things, but the more KNICKERS, TITTIES, AND BOOMPS A DAISYS you throw in, the more it makes me grin!

Yes a very funny clip tempted to post it over on the DT but Mr Misery would censor it.

    Good one, Crown.

Let’s see what the next James blog will bring. More of the same? Or a lighter, more judicious touch — and especially, less willingness to be the puppet of the watermelons?

    We shall see.

    Your friend,
    Amanda

I think words will be said, a lot of rather non offensive comments have been deleted who on earth would delete yours and mshers comments it is taking it to ridiculous lengths.

Am I allowed to say WILLY, TITTY, BUM and KNICKERS if I want to? 🙂

    • on October 10, 2010 at 9:21 pm crownarmourer

Yes SA you are free to say what you want except where it breaks the law and I have to contact the FBI.

      • on October 10, 2010 at 10:38 pm Amanda

Don’t forget Interpol! And Inspector Clouseau.

        • on October 10, 2010 at 10:41 pm crownarmourer

    From amanda….
Amanda: ‘Ooh,ooh, ooh, Mr Crownarmourer, sir, I have a question sir!’
    Crown: ‘Yes, Amanda’.
A: ‘What if I say poodle tip instead?’
    C: ‘That’s perfectly fine’.
    A: ‘And foodle sip?’
    C: ‘That’s fine also’.
    A: ‘What about doodle quip?’
    C: ‘Acceptable, too’.
A: ‘And if I say that we are not fascists to think that Leftists support warmists who want climate to change and to be man’s fault because then they can undermine capitalism in its name, along with sovereignty, personal choice, and democracy, what then?’
    C: ‘Well, then you’re *****d’.
