Unfortunately I know exactly what will happen tomorrow. I shall spend a good portion of the day with tears streaming down my face. Tomorrow I have to summon a vet and have one of my Golden Retrievers put down. This has been an exceptionally sad holiday season. My lovely Hannah was born with hip dysplasia which we didn’t discover until she was over 8 years old. A double hip replacement would have set me back $11,000 and put her in a sling and a cage for about 3 months of her life. We decided against it. She got along pretty well up to about a year ago when we could no longer take her on walks. Last week she quite suddenly became unable to walk. We’ve exhausted all pharmacologic means of intervention. Over the days leading up to Christmas my girlfriend and I came to the inevitable conclusion of what must be done. She cried at work most of last week. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. So far the only promise 2011 holds is the prospect of a new puppy to help fill the void left in my heart at the loss of Hannah.

Sorry to be such a bummer…but I had to get this off my chest.

Oh how I understand what you’re going through. We had to make that decision last August when our 16yr old could no longer walk. We’d had him as a rescue dog when he was 4 and he went through all the upheaval of selling up and moving here to Greece with us. Our only consolation was what a good and interesting life he’d had.
      Thinking of you…..

      Dr Dave,
age is not kind. I know how you feel and my thoughts are with the three of you.

Our jack russel (he’s from Cork, so he’s an arrogant little twat, coming from Cork trumps any genetic input) took 3 ops to get his knee fixed last year,

he and the spaniel cross are both getting into doggy middle age, we also have 2 teenage cats and a high maintenance rodent.

The 15 year old cat came to us this year, her owner was emmigrating to Africa, she now sleeps ontop of me every night.

      They’re family.

Sorry to hear about your dog, taking one to be euthanized is hard, I’ve had to do it once before it’s never easy, however it is a lot kinder than letting the poor dog suffer or be in pain. I suppose this is why I prefer mutts they usually come with fewer health issues.

        meltemian, luton ian & crown,

Thank you all for your kindness. The vet came and left with my beloved Hannah this morning. The entire process was far less traumatic than I had feared. My girlfriend, my other Golden and I all gathered round.

It’s weird. I’ve watched I don’t know how many humans die and I’ve always been able to apply some degree of emotional detachment. When it’s YOUR dog the rules change. I could never do what vets do. They have to deal with not only the animals but the people as well.

I shall sorely miss my dear Hannah’s big brown eyes, big smile and wagging tail but at least we can look forward to the prospect of a new puppy who will destroy our home and rule our lives for the next year.

Thanks to all for your thoughts. I appreciate it.

        Dave

    My predictions:

–Penguins will relocate to the surf of Australia, having decided that they can’t take any more of this AGW, because it’s too damn cold.

–I shall have a success for once in my life.

–Al Gore will star as himself in the movie of Pachauri’s bestselling bodice-ripper, All The Vice-President’s Masseuses. However, in the movie the hottest masseuse gives in, so art should be more satisfying than life (as often happens).

–My dog will finally have trained me to make her meals beefier and less turkey-ridden. I’m a slow learner, but I do get there eventually.

–The red squirrel will send secret commandos against greys, which will disappear from Britain overnight.

–Towards the end of the year, Skye Edwards will once again produce a memorably melodic song with Morcheeba, even though I think they missed the target with their reunion effort.

–Republicans will start feeling a strange kind of pity for Obama, knowing that his reign of foolishness is so over.
