Old TV themes and the shows you remember?

April 19, 2011 by Syd

Well stumbled onto some old music from a 1970’s TV show and got all misty eyed about the past, well not really because I’m Mr Diogenes of Sinope usually woof. So here is a chance to post your favourite theme tunes from your past and what did you like about the show and how ridiculous they seem now. Not many shows stand up to the test of time.
Well here’s one from me…

    Kitler,

Were those tornados in Alabama, weather or climate?

  2. on April 24, 2011 at 12:27 am Kitler

I know JD watched this one….

  3. on April 23, 2011 at 11:55 pm Ozboy

OK I’m feeling like an anime fix:

    • on April 24, 2011 at 12:07 am Ozboy

      Not there yet…

      • on April 24, 2011 at 12:11 am Ozboy

        Ahhh, that’s better…

For many decades this was the first song millions of American kids heard every morning:

    • on April 23, 2011 at 3:18 pm Kitler

Dr Dave I’m familiar with the music and have heard of the show but this was our children’s TV….

      • on April 23, 2011 at 3:43 pm Dr. Dave

Well…this explains a lot of what I’ve always suspected about Brits. In fact, I think it just solved the pointman mystery for me.

        • on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 pm Amanda

          Dr Dave: You’ve solved it???!!!!

  5. on April 22, 2011 at 7:55 pm Dr. Dave

You rarely get to hear the lyrics to this American classic:

  6. on April 21, 2011 at 9:06 pm Amanda

May I just say (and who’s gonna stop me?), since Dr Dave posted the theme to Bonanza (which one never forgets), that Michael Landon had incredibly long ears? And also that Lorne Green is a very masculine, sexy name. The man wasn’t bad, either.

  7. on April 21, 2011 at 1:26 pm bosco

Sorry ol chap. Your site is ok but theme songs isnt a cutting edge topic.

    • on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 pm Amanda

Bosco: He knows. That’s why he chose it. See?

  8. on April 20, 2011 at 11:28 pm Kitler

    Who could forget this one….

    oo

  14. on April 20, 2011 at 10:35 am meltemian

Well I didn’t THINK I’d got it to embed! Just goes to show…..

  15. on April 20, 2011 at 10:33 am meltemian

Sorry folks – can’t get this to embed – you know how useless I am!!
    The Lone Ranger

I heard the music from Black Beauty on the wireless the other day.

Which reminds me, I can’t find my copy of Tom Sharpe’s Riotous Assembly.

It must have gone the same way as my copy of “The economic definition of ore” which was signed by Lane and presented to RSM (shows how much they valued it, that it ended up in a second hand shop).

    • on April 27, 2011 at 10:40 pm Amanda

Do you really still call it the ‘wireless’, Ian? Isn’t that — I dunno — about 50 years out of date?

      • on April 28, 2011 at 7:40 am Luton Ian

        Not at all,

a cat’s whisker set with a piece of lead sulphide as the semi conductor is cutting edge technology ’round these parts.

        You’re not local, are you?

        • on May 1, 2011 at 12:45 am Amanda

No, Ian, but I’d like to be!

  17. on April 20, 2011 at 1:43 am Dr. Dave

One more from the 60s, then it’s off to bed…

  18. on April 20, 2011 at 1:40 am Dr. Dave

    An American classic…

    • on April 20, 2011 at 11:18 pm Kitler

Dr Dave didn’t the dolphin die tragically in in Tuna net, he tasted quite nice.

      • on April 22, 2011 at 11:40 pm Dr. Dave

Probably right. And Skippy was turned into Adidas running shoes and dog food. Skippy and Flipper were essentially the same show in different settings with different animals.

  19. on April 20, 2011 at 1:37 am Dr. Dave

    Kitler,

    You were right…this IS fun!

    • on April 20, 2011 at 3:14 am Ozboy

Aww thanks Dave… I resisted the urge to put that one in. The term “bush kangaroo” btw is a tautology: there’s no “chic, urban, apartment-dwelling, chardonnay-sipping kangaroo”, you know 😉

      • on April 20, 2011 at 5:42 am Luton Ian

I’m told the first draft was called “Skippy the bush fly”

      • on April 20, 2011 at 11:02 am Dr. Dave

I read somewhere that Skippy was banned in Sweden. It was determined that the show leads children to think animals can do things they really can’t. I’m tellin’ ya…there’s no foolin’ them Swedes.

  20. on April 20, 2011 at 1:26 am Ozboy

Kitler, if you’re like me you drank this one in with your mothers milk. Dave and other Americans you might not be familiar with it.

    It’s a puppet thing…

    • on April 20, 2011 at 11:15 pm Kitler

Ozboy yep I grew up with that and this one…

      • on April 22, 2011 at 5:54 pm Ozboy

        Or maybe…

  21. on April 20, 2011 at 12:20 am Kitler

    The Magic Roundabout…

    oo

    Or this version…

  22. on April 20, 2011 at 12:16 am Dr. Dave

    Y’all don’t know quality television…

    • on April 20, 2011 at 12:35 am Kitler

DrDave I didn’t see this until the 1980’s but still pretty funny.

  23. on April 19, 2011 at 11:08 pm Ozboy

…or the greatest TV cartoon theme of them all: probably was responsible for re-introducing the harpsichord to popular music in the 60’s:

    • on April 22, 2011 at 6:10 pm Ozboy

      And the runner-up:

  24. on April 19, 2011 at 11:06 pm Ozboy

    Something a bit more highbrow:

    • on April 20, 2011 at 12:37 am Kitler

I think I may have seen superchicken.

  25. on April 19, 2011 at 10:42 pm Kitler

Well here’s another one from the 70’s…
